POST CONFERENCE FIELD TRIP
A field trip is planned on the 2nd April 2008 to the Lavrion area, 55 km south-east of the city of Athens, a unique site that combines geology, history, culture and environmental impact of ancient and recent mining and ore beneficiation activities.
Participants will be guided through the geological setting of the ore, ancient adits and ore beneficiation washing plants dating back to 5th Century B.C., as well as the 19th- 20th Century smelter complex, which is now converted into a Technological- Cultural Park. Environmental problems caused by metal contamination and remediation measures in the urban area of Lavrion will be discussed. The field trip will end with a visit to the nearby Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, a site of archaeological interest with an astonishing view to the Aegean Sea.
The field trip is optional and the cost (€60) is not included in the registration fee.
